Project
Alberto Cavalcanti Study Day
BIMI - Birkbeck Institute for the Moving Image · July 2022
Overview
40 years after his death, we helped organise a celebration of filmmaker Alberto Cavalcanti's transnational career, including a discussion on his pivotal role in French, British and Brazilian cinemas. The conference included a showcase of film excerpts and archive material, including rare glimpses of Cavalcanti's first full-length film.
Outcomes
The conference successfully advanced discussions surrounding 'the most significant figure in British cinema history who still lacks an English-language biography,' as defined by Sight and Sound. As a direct outcome, the director of Brazil's national film archive (Cinemateca Brasileira) extended a formal invitation for international collaboration aimed at the restoration and touring of Cavalcanti's films.
